DESCRIPTION:A case for iterative morphophonological learning: the morpheme-boundedness of Arabic OCP \nAcquisition research shows that the timelines of early phonotactic learning and morphological learning largely overlap. This conflicts with a common simplification in computational modeling of phonological learning\, where phonotactic generalizations are learned from input with complete morphological information. I demonstrate a case of discrepancy between lexicon regularities and native speaker intuitions wherein models with this simplification fail to match human behavior. In Arabic\, OCP restrictions disfavor sequences of homorganic consonants within roots. Even though these restrictions exhibit “leakage effects” in the lexicon\, i.e.\, also apply with weak strength across morpheme boundaries\, nonce word judgments show that Arabic speakers learn them as strictly morpheme-bounded. Instead\, I propose the iterative morphophonological (IMP) learner to account for this result. This learner takes a developmentally-plausible approach to phonotactic learning\, where 1) phonotactic restrictions are extracted from protolexical forms with partial\, inaccurate morphological information\, and 2) the developing phonotactic grammars inform the discovery of morphological boundaries in turn. As such\, the tendency to learn strictly morpheme-bounded restrictions despite being exposed to evidence of leakage emerges as a result of phonotactic-based morphological parsing. \nLocation: Boelter Hall 5419

DESCRIPTION:Parts and wholes in children’s understanding of plural expressions \nLanguages differentially mark whether reference is made to individuals (singulars) or to collections of individuals (plurals). While the core distinction is acquired early (e.g. Kouider et al.\, 2006; Barner et al.\, 2007)\, plural expressions introduce substantial additional semantic complexity in how atomic individuals contribute to their meanings (cf. Link\, 1983; Schwarzschild\, 1994). Here\, I present three case studies that examine how children navigate this complexity. \nThe first study investigates cumulative vs. distributive readings of sentences containing multiple plural expressions (e.g. “Two girls have three balloons {each/together}”)\, which previous work has found children may not reliably distinguish (Pagliarini et al.\, 2012; Syrett & Musolino\, 2013\, a.o.). In our study\, both interpretations of ambiguous sentences produced priming effects in children\, implying that they indeed distinguish between those readings\, but may struggle with the linguistic markers associated with them (e.g. “each”\, “together”). The second study examines children’s acquisition of maximal interpretations of definite plurals (e.g. “John read the books” meaning “John read ALL of the books”). We found that preschoolers often accepted both maximal and non-maximal construals of definite plurals\, suggesting that they do not consistently assign maximal interpretations to plural definites and raising questions about what underlies these difficulties. In the third study\, we further explore the source of this flexibility by prompting children of the same age to consider maximal plural sets and proportions thereof using partitive constructions involving the non-maximality remover “all” and the proportional quantifier “half” (as in “all of the cookies” and “half of the cookies”). Here we observe clear improvements\, in particular ceiling performance for “all”-quantified sentences\, indicating that children are able to derive and distinguish maximal and non-maximal interpretations. Taken together these results suggest that although preschoolers continue to struggle with the semantic and pragmatic constraints associated with plural constructions\, they are capable of deriving the relevant meaning distinctions well before their behavior reflects full competence.

DESCRIPTION:When Number Agreement Acts Like a Polarity Item: Disjunctive Agreement Across Semantic Environments \nDo context or semantic environment ever affect agreement morphology? Yes\, I argue in this talk. Examining number agreement with disjoined subjects in English — e.g.\, the difference between ‘Ann doubts that Bob or Cal is coming’ and ‘Ann doubts that Bob or Cal are coming’ — I show that verbal agreement with disjoined subjects is sensitive to semantic factors such as scope\, monotonicity\, and quantification. Though past analyses (Foppolo & Staub 2020\, Himmelreich & Hartmann 2023\, Krifka & Modarresi 2024\, a.o.) have sought to derive free variation between singular and plural agreement\, I argue\, following Ivlieva (2013)\, that plural-agreeing disjunction is only acceptable in certain semantic environments\, namely in polar questions and when scoping beneath certain quantifiers. I show that the environments in which disjoined subjects can control plural agreement are the same kinds of environments in which indefinites fail to introduce discourse referents targetable by anaphora outside the same clause (Karttunen 1976). Thus\, drawing on Giannakidou (1998\, 2011)’s analysis of NPIs\, I argue that plural agreement with disjunctive subjects results from a deficient head within the disjunction that introduces a ‘non-deictic’ (using Giannakidou’s terminology) variable\, i.e.\, a variable incompatible with top-level existential closure which therefore cannot be accessible outside of the semantic environment it appears in. This deficient head makes the disjunction syntactically plural\, leading to the observed agreement morphology. I discuss connections with NPIs. \nLocation: Kaplan Hall A65

DESCRIPTION:Prosodic Boundaries as Windows into Speech Planning: Timing\, Meaning\, and the Role of Focus \nProsodic boundaries are systematically marked through temporal modulations in articulation\, most prominently phrase-final (pre-boundary) lengthening. While this phenomenon is widely attested and often treated as a universal marker of prosodic structure\, its scope and functional basis remain poorly understood. In particular\, it is unclear whether boundary-related timing reflects fixed grammatical domains\, local temporal intervals\, or more general properties of speech planning. \nIn this talk\, I present articulatory evidence from Greek\, Tokyo Japanese\, and Seoul Korean\, as well as acoustic evidence from Lesbian Greek\, showing that the scope of phrase-final lengthening is not tied to a single domain or fixed interval. Instead\, it is systematically sensitive to those prosodic dimensions that encode word-sized conceptual units in each language. These findings suggest that boundary-related timing reflects how speakers organize and coordinate meaning during speech planning. Building on this account\, I then turn to focus as a test case for how information structure interacts with prosodic timing. Drawing on articulatory data from American English\, Seoul Korean\, and Taiwan Mandarin\, as well as acoustic evidence from Yami (Tao)\, I show that focus is not a binary distinction\, but a hierarchically structured system that is encoded through graded articulatory strengthening. Crucially\, focus also reshapes the temporal organization of the phrase\, modulating the extent of phrase-final lengthening and\, in some cases\, inducing reorganization of prosodic phrasing\, such as dephrasing. \nI argue that these patterns are best understood within a unified framework in which prosodic timing emerges from the coordination of nested rhythmic cycles during speech planning. On this view\, the Intonational Phrase is temporally organized with respect to meaning\, with focus defining the anchor of the IP-level cycle. Phrase-final lengthening then reflects how this cycle unfolds toward its terminal phase\, rather than a fixed edge-based effect. \nLocation: Kaplan Hall A65
