DESCRIPTION:Location: Royce Hall 362 \nPhonological Selection in Small Sublexicons\n\nAffixes can impose phonological restrictions on the stems they attach to: only consonant-final stems\, or stems no bigger than two syllables. These restrictions remain poorly understood and under-formalized. For example\, Prosodic Morphology-era analyses characterize adjectival -er/-est affixation as selecting for a trochee\, but it remains a mystery why this trochee can be disyllabic\, while the -en suffix ("stiff-en"\, "redd-en") admits only obstruent-final monosyllables. I\nconsider the problem from the perspective of sublexical theory\, whereby the generalizations about such patterns are statistically extracted rather than being part of the morphological rules governing the affixes. The challenge taken on in this talk is how to extract generalizations from small sublexicons.\n\nI explore size restrictions imposed by two suffixes of Russian: the adjectival "notable body part" -ast suffix (e.g.\, glaz-ast-ij 'big-eyed') and the nominal "baby diminutive" -onok (e.g.\, akulʲ-onok 'baby shark'). The -ast suffix selects for disyllabic stems\, while the baby diminutive selects for maximally trisyllabic stems. In Sharoff's (2005) list of Russian words that occur at least once per million in the Russian National Corpus\, -ast adjectives are represented by just 17 lemmas\, and -onok baby diminutives by 29 lemmas. An exploration\nof a larger corpus shows that both affixes are productive\, and their size selection constraints are projected in a frequency-matching pattern. The frequency-matching even extends to the semantics of the stems\, specifically the categories that typically figure in inalienable possession.  \n\nMy explanation for this is that the rules contain lexical lists (sublexicons) but no phonological (or semantic) context. Learners form phonological generalizations by calculating disparities between what is attested in the sublexicon defined by each affix vs. what is attested in the set of comparable stems in the language as a whole. The generalizations tend to be coarse (to borrow Pierrehumbert's (2001) term) because a small sublexicon is likely to support only a generalization that is informed by every item in the list: all stems\ninclude syllables\, consonants\, and vowels\, but not all stems supply evidence of finer-grained underattestation at the level of segmental features. I also argue that a Prosodic Morphology-style subcategorization frame cannot capture the 2-syll and 3-syll selection in Russian because these units do not correspond to prosodic constituents in the language.

DESCRIPTION:Economy in PF-Reduction: Why and when (not) to elide multidominant structures? \nIn this talk\, reporting on joint work with Martina Gračanin-Yuksek\, we examine two ways in which a syntactic structure can be PF-reduced (unpronounced): multidominance (MD) and ellipsis. If both ellipsis and MD are available in principle\, the following questions arise: (i) what factors influence the choice between ellipsis and MD? (ii) can multiply-dominated material be elided and if so\, under what circumstances? To answer these questions\, we look at the properties of coordinate structures in which the elements that survive PF-reduction are wh-phrases: Coordinated Wh-Questions (CWHs) and Coordinated Sluices (CSs)\, illustrated in (1-2). \n(1) What and when should you teach?                                                                   CWH \n(2) Someone saw something\, but I can’t remember who or what.                         CS \nOur main claim is that PF reduction is governed by economy\, which affects syntactic derivations in two ways. First\, economy favors “least effort” derivations (i.e.\, derivations with fewest operations) from the set of possible derivations that arrive at the same string with the same interpretation (Chomsky 1991; Bošković 1997; Collins 2001; among many others)\, and\, second\, economy bans derivations in which PF reducing operations apply vacuously (i.e.\, without having an effect on pronunciation). \nLocation: Royce Hall 362

SUMMARY:Colloquium Talk - Jake Aziz "Syntax and Prosody in Malagasy"
DESCRIPTION:A correspondence between syntactic and prosodic constituency has been observed for many languages\, and Malagasy (VOS) is no exception: the predicate and subject each forms its own phonological phrase\, marked at its right edge with a rising pitch accent (i.e.\, phonological phrasing is [VO] [S]). Imperatives\, though\, exhibit a different pattern: imperative verb heads and their objects are prosodically distinct (i.e.\, [V] [O] [S]). This pattern is surprising given that imperatives and declaratives have a similar surface word order and no immediately-evident structural differences that would correspond to the observed prosody. This apparent mismatch could be explained as either a) a true syntax-prosody mismatch\, where the observed prosody of imperatives is caused by some other prosodic requirement\, or b) an incomplete understanding of the syntax of the imperative. In this talk\, I will present original prosodic and syntactic data and conclude that the Malagasy imperative adheres to a strict syntax-prosody correspondence if we consider a revised analysis of the syntax where objects raise out of the predicate verb phrase in imperative structures. SUMMARY:Lucas Gautheron
DESCRIPTION:Lucas Gautheron\, a PhD student working with Alex Cristia on the Language Acquisition Across Cultures Team\, will be visiting our department   June 17-19th. He will be giving a talk (title/abstract below) from 1-2:30PM on June 17th\, and then will provide a tutorial from 3PM to ~4PM on the data management system developed in his lab\, ChildProject. Lucas has also generously offered to sit down with anyone and work through on their data management flows and/or discuss theoretical work on acquisition\, NLP\, etc. You can sign up for a time to meet and chat with him here. \nLucas’ visit will be of interest to anyone working in psycholinguistics\, acquisition\, NLP\, and/or automatic speech recognition. Even if you are uninterested in using longform recordings\, or working with children\, I think that the tutorial in particular will be really valuable to attend as it covers a lot of topics related to organization and management of huge amounts of language and speech data\, which most experimentalists now work with. \nTitle: “Correlational analyses of the effects of caregivers’ speech behaviour on children’s speech production“ \nAuthors: Lucas Gautheron (speaker) and Alejandrina Cristia \nAbstract: This paper addresses the relationship between the quantity of speech children are exposed to (input) and the quantity of speech they produce (output)\, exploring developmental outcomes and the evolution of children’s conversational abilities with age. Using longitudinal datasets of long-form audio recordings\, we propose a correlational approach to these phenomena. This approach considers the conversational\, contextual and developmental processes that drive correlations between input and output. Measuring and disentangling these causal pathways is challenging for two reasons. First\, as we show\, algorithmic errors can significantly distort correlations. Second\, the conversational\, contextual and developmental processes that drive these correlations operate on different time scales and interact with each other in complex ways. To address these issues\, we begin by proposing a Bayesian method for overcoming the effect of algorithmic errors.* Then\, we show how a complex systems approach can benefit to causal analyses of multi-scalar processes\, by decomposing different aspects of behavior according to their time-scale\, and then measuring their relationship.† \n* This is quite fleshed out\, and there is a draft that could be shareable soon \n† This project is more in progress.
