SUMMARY:Colloquium Talk – Argyro Katsika
DESCRIPTION:Prosodic Boundaries as Windows into Speech Planning: Timing\, Meaning\, and the Role of Focus \nProsodic boundaries are systematically marked through temporal modulations in articulation\, most prominently phrase-final (pre-boundary) lengthening. While this phenomenon is widely attested and often treated as a universal marker of prosodic structure\, its scope and functional basis remain poorly understood. In particular\, it is unclear whether boundary-related timing reflects fixed grammatical domains\, local temporal intervals\, or more general properties of speech planning. \nIn this talk\, I present articulatory evidence from Greek\, Tokyo Japanese\, and Seoul Korean\, as well as acoustic evidence from Lesbian Greek\, showing that the scope of phrase-final lengthening is not tied to a single domain or fixed interval. Instead\, it is systematically sensitive to those prosodic dimensions that encode word-sized conceptual units in each language. These findings suggest that boundary-related timing reflects how speakers organize and coordinate meaning during speech planning. Building on this account\, I then turn to focus as a test case for how information structure interacts with prosodic timing. Drawing on articulatory data from American English\, Seoul Korean\, and Taiwan Mandarin\, as well as acoustic evidence from Yami (Tao)\, I show that focus is not a binary distinction\, but a hierarchically structured system that is encoded through graded articulatory strengthening. Crucially\, focus also reshapes the temporal organization of the phrase\, modulating the extent of phrase-final lengthening and\, in some cases\, inducing reorganization of prosodic phrasing\, such as dephrasing. \nI argue that these patterns are best understood within a unified framework in which prosodic timing emerges from the coordination of nested rhythmic cycles during speech planning. On this view\, the Intonational Phrase is temporally organized with respect to meaning\, with focus defining the anchor of the IP-level cycle. Phrase-final lengthening then reflects how this cycle unfolds toward its terminal phase\, rather than a fixed edge-based effect. \nLocation: Kaplan Hall A65

SUMMARY:Colloquium Talk – Dustin Chacón
DESCRIPTION:Rethinking the fundamentals of sentence comprehension \nA nearly self-evident fact about human language is that knowing a language consists of two systems: a list of terms stored in long-term memory (the lexicon)\, and the procedural system for composing these terms into complex expressions (the grammar). This distinction is further reified in theories of language comprehension and typical psycholinguistic methodologies (Krauska & Lau 2023). By contrast\, research in cognitive neuroscience of language paints a far murkier picture\, with no obvious distinctions between brain areas that support sentence and word meanings (e.g.\, Shain et al. 2024) or syntactic vs. morphosyntactic structure (e.g.\, Stockall & Gwilliams 2023). How do we reconcile this? \nHere\, I present on two experiments that seek to bridge this gap. In the first experiment\, I show that magnetoencephalography (MEG) responses to morphologically complex words in Bengali (Bangla) show sensitivity to both morphosyntactic and lexical-semantic properties in right anterior temporal lobe ~200ms. This suggests that retrieval of basic conceptual representations overlap with morphosyntactic structure building. In the second study\, we use the ‘rapid parallel visual presentation’ (RPVP) paradigm\, in which participants read short phrases in a single glance. This effectively prevents serial\, word-by-word reading typically deployed in other experimental paradigms. We show that electroencephalography (EEG) activity elicited during the processing of noun-adjective phrases in Spanish shows near-simultaneous effects of lexical surprisal\, neighborhood density effects\, and syntactic processing ~200-250ms in posterior sensors. We suggest that the brain simultaneously retrieves lexical items while processing morphosyntactic and syntactic structure in a holistic fashion\, with no serial or temporal ordering between ‘lexical’ and ‘(morpho)syntactic’/structure-building processes. I then conclude by suggesting some preliminary boundary conditions for what a parsing architecture might look like that does not presuppose ‘word-by-word’ sentence processing nor a discrete boundary between the grammar and lexicon. \nLocation: Kaplan Hall A65

SUMMARY:Syntax/Semantics Seminar – Jessica Rett
DESCRIPTION:The semantics of high negation \nThe goal of this paper is to provide a compositional account of high negation – negation that occurs in the left periphery and makes an expressive contribution – across a wide variety of constructions. I propose that negation\, like other natural language expressions\, is anaphoric: it can either associate with content inside of or prior to the present utterance\, and it can only do the latter when it’s high. This ‘exophoric’ interpretation of high negation involves anaphora to some prior claim or expectation\, instead of the descriptive content of the utterance it occurs in. I argue that this account solves some empirical puzzles for high negation questions introduced in Frana and Rawlins (2019) while avoiding positing that all languages lexicalize two distinct negation meanings in a homophonous morpheme.

SUMMARY:Colloquium Talk – Kathryn Franich
DESCRIPTION:Cross-Linguistic Variation in Co-Speech Gesture Timing: Evidence for Grammatical Control \nCo-speech gestures have traditionally been treated as an ‘extralinguistic’ phenomenon\, not implicated in theories of grammar (e.g. Hagoort & van Berkum 2007). In this talk\, I discuss cross-linguistic findings on the coordination of speech and co-speech gesture that reveal clear evidence of language-specific timing patterns\, a hallmark of grammatical control (Pierrehumbert 1980; Keating 1984). Looking at data from Medʉmba\, Babanki\, and two varieties of English\,  I demonstrate that a) gestures reveal language-specific patterns of prosodic prominence\, and b) co-speech gestures\, like oral articulatory gestures\, show language-specific patterns in the gestural landmarks selected for coordination (c.f. Browman & Goldstein 1986; Gafos 2002; Shaw et al. 2021). I then propose a framework for integrating co-speech gestures into the analysis of prosodic grammar. \nLocation: Kaplan Hall A65
